A guy's guide to planning a first date

restaurant, you're off to a good start. What you do after dinner requires some intuition and at least two different plans.
Again, some basic rules.
1. Know your date. This is tricky, obviously, because it is a first date. But chances are, you have some idea whether she likes to party, likes to talk about politics, digs live music or just loves a ball game. Plan accordingly.

2. Don't watch a movie. This is probably the least productive thing you could possibly do on a first date. It's going to take at least an hour and a half, meaning that if you've gone to dinner, you're probably not leaving the movie theater until 10 p.m. in most cases, which means that you've spent half your date not flirting, not drinking, not even talking. Plus, movies make people tired, which is terrible for you.
3. Do something that will foster physical contact and/or laughing. Many times, all you need to do is move from your perfect restaurant to a perfect bar. Think along the lines of a martini bar, wine bar, maybe even a piano bar under the right circumstances. Or you could choose some simple activity like miniature golf. Basically, if you feel like you can carry a conversation, pick a place where the two of you can continue to converse while loosening up with more alcohol. If you're not that comfortable, pick some place where the conversation will create itself.

Do this for an hour or two and try to gauge her interest in a) you, and b) the evening. She is probably not going to outright tell you what she wants to do, but if you've been attentive, you'll know. If, throughout the night, she touches you unnecessarily (usually by touching your hand during conversation or slapping you in the chest or abs in a playful moment) or looks at you with her head tilted slightly down like she's peering over a pair of glasses she isn't wearing, you're in pretty good shape and you ought to pursue a third venue.

For the third stop, conversation shouldn't be all that important. Physical contact is. Take her to a place where you can dance with her. Again, this gives you an opportunity to show that you know your way around and know how to have a good time. If you continue drinking, it also gives her an excuse for why she made out with you and gives you an excuse for why you got as physical as you did. It's a win-win.

You
First off, some basic rules of dress.
1. Wear jeans. Not shorts, not slacks, not cargo pants. Jeans. It's the only way you can guarantee your pants will not be the deal breaker.
2. No T-shirts
