in real life, including a young Japanese man who re-created some of the scenes in the Guinea Pig films in real life during a tragic killing spree in Japan in 1988. (http://www.guineapigfilms.com /front.html)
Ultraviolence is a trend that has recently swept through the national cinema of Japan, with directors like Takashi Miike leading the way. His film 'Ichi the Killer' is often referenced when referring to "the most violent films". Like much of Miike's other works, it is actually a fantastic film. Addressing taboo issues such as voyeurism, rape, murder, organized crime, and the relationships that these behaviors have with each other.
'Battle Royale' is another Japanese film, adapted from the manga (comic book) of the same name, that is often referred to when referencing violence in the cinema. A modern day 'Lord of the Flies' if you will, 'Battle Royale' is an excellent take on human nature and the existence of relationships within a rapidly changing culture in Japan due to the rise in population of the younger post-modern generation.
It seems that Japan is now to global cinema, what Italy and its filmmakers such as Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento, were in the 1970s and 80s. At least in regard to horror/gore films. The rapid rise in popularity of zombie themed films during those decades can be largely attributed to both of those directors, and many of their contemporaries in Italy. No disrespect to the godfather of zombie films, George A. Romero, of course. He has shaped the entire history of the genre, and continues to do so.
I could go on and on forever about gory/violent films, but this is long enough. This should be a decent intro to anyone looking to find a few films to check out and maybe shock themselves with. Be warned though, all of the above mentioned films are NOT for the weak of heart, or stomach.
If you can't stand to watch torture, rape, copious amounts of blood, real animals dying, or anything of this sort, then please please please do not even bother with any of these films.
