Poetry: Blank canvas

by Rhoda Vreeland

Created on: April 20, 2008

I am a teacher-
An artist of sorts.

I begin each August
With twenty blank canvases
Four feet high
With curious eyes
And ruddy, red cheeks;
A clean, unblemished beginning,
Each a fresh masterpiece.

I am a teacher-
An artist of sorts.

With an enthusiastic hand
I reveal the world
In all its glory
In its red, blue, and green
And open each blank canvas
To reflect in part
The glory of the whole
Each as is unique
To the scope of the canvas.

I am a teacher-
An artist of sorts.

I add light to perspective
Revealing both shadow and radiance
To the world in all its glory;
And on each canvas
I spread
Depth.
New dimension
On each canvas
Forming independent scope.

I am a teacher-
An artist of sorts.

Each June I sit
And reflect
On twenty breathtaking canvases-
Each portraying a piece of the world
In all its glory
Bursting with rich expression,
Creative angles,
And illuminated senses of self.

I am a teacher
An artist of sorts.
And I have seen the world
In all its glory.
