It is necessary that secondary school students should be required to volunteer in community service projects for a variety of reasons including:
1) Getting Teens Off the Couch and Utilizing Their Skills
Teenagers today are larger than they've ever been and that can be put down largely to technology and food consumption. Teens nowadays are becoming lazier since the introduction of computer games and as a result have been doing limited exercise. The rapid accumulation of junk food now being consumed has meant that a teen's diet contains too much fat and not enough kilojoules which has therefore also instigated a lack of exercise because teenagers don't consume the energy they need.
As a result of this, teenagers are sitting in front of their computers or televisions, eating junk food and getting larger due to their limited amount of exercise and the accumulation of saturated and Trans fats in their bodies.
If mandatory community service was introduced for high school students then they would have no choice but to get out of the house so they can complete it. Depending on the nature of the task they could be doing a decent amount of exercise and getting fit and healthy because of it. Depending also on the nature of the person's diet there is a good chance that if their diet is loaded with empty calories then there should be a large inclination to consume at least some healthier types of foods as to have enough energy to sustain them throughout the course of the community service they are completing.
2) Teach High School Students the Value of a Dollar
For most high school students, doing community service would aid greatly in teaching or further teaching them the value of a dollar. If a student has to volunteer for community service then when they start working for an employer they will appreciate every cent they earn because they will never have been paid for doing work before and the pay would not be taken for granted.
3) Improve Social Skills
In doing community service, high school students would improve their social skills because they would be subjected to a wide range of activities and therefore a large variety of people. Students would be able to learn how to converse freely and make friends with new people of varying ages and backgrounds, thus having the ability to be influenced by people other than their fellow teenagers. Therefore (in many cases) this would create a much more approachable, reliable and trustworthy person with a broader knowledge of social
