OF WRITING
While the elementary language arts curriculum does incorporate some poetry writing, other genres remain virtually untouched. Lots of simple writing tasks, mixed with a dab of originality, can be easily integrated to sharpen young students' creativity skills. Teachers can create assignments that instruct students to write out brief drama skits, advertisements, interviews, letters, character profiles, songs, poems, narratives, comedies or recipes. Teachers can also ask students to submit journals or reflections about various topics on an ongoing basis, in a wide variety of genres.
As a part of a novel study, teachers could integrate reading and writing skills by asking students to write detailed profiles and analyses of the characters in the various novels read in class. Teachers could challenge students to re-write different parts of books from a different character's point of view, or ask students to re-write the ending of a book studied in class.
At the most basic level, teachers can introduce creativity on an ongoing basis by instructing students to write about their own personal experiences, such as favorite memories, hobbies, places, or pets, in any type of genre.
Creative writing exercises help students acquire good general writing skills and promote free-spirited adventurousness and originality. Regular creative writing encourages students to discover their inner selves and critically think about the world they live in from various angles and perspectives, realistic and fantastic, even at a young age.
The possibilities in creative writing are limitless, as creative writing itself is expansive and infinite. If you are a teacher, why not test your own creativity skills and try writing out some of your own original creative writing assignments for your students?
