Dating back to the early 1600's Philadelphia was founded first by the Swedish, Dutch, and English. The historical value of this city is greatly appreciated by the tourists of today. Besides the great food and in door markets, Philadelphia has many attractions that would appeal to all ages.
When visiting, there are many sites that should be seen. The Liberty Bell is one of them. It is located on 6th and Chestnut, in a glass pavilion. Not only do you get to see a piece of history but also interactive exhibits, including an x-ray of the famous crack, photos and narratives. Its is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you have small children let them know that they can only look at it because the Liberty Bell is only blocked off by ropes, leaving easy access to the little ones.
There is nothing like entering the building where the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were signed, Independence Hall. It is located on 520 Chestnut St. It is open daily from 9a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Betsy Ross house located on 239 Arch St. She was America's famous flag maker. Her home is now on display with a costumed actress telling stories. It is open April thru October Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., October thru March Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There is only one place in Philadelphia were you can walk thru a two-story tall Giant heart. The Franklin Institute is located on 222N 20th St. It holds many of Ben Franklin's ideas, modern day science exhibits, an IMAX theater, and planetarium. If you have small children this a good place to take them considering a lot of the exhibits are interactive. It is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If you have seen the movie "Rocky" you know the famous steps found at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, located on 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy. This museum holds over 83 galleries plus other exhibits. It is hard to see it all in one day. On Sunday's they have an art class for ages 3-12. It is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Friday hours are until 8:45p.m.
There are many places to eat in Philadelphia. Every where you turn there is a restaurant or vendor. Honestly, I have eaten in many restaurants and I don't have any complaints on any of them. If you are looking for an authentic cheese steak I would recommend, Geno's Steaks on 1219 S 9th St. The menu is basic and the line maybe long but it worth it and they move quickly.
Philadelphia will give anyone from child to adult a memorable experience. Even if you aren't a history or science nut, everything is still interesting and fun. This city holds so much of Americas history and I am glad I was able to experience it.
