Exploring the expression 'the grass is always greener'

by Ellen Layug

Created on: April 19, 2008

In my younger years, I would often hear the elders talk about the greener grass everytime someone is moving to another place or changing jobs. They would always say they are doing it for greener pasture. It seems that everyone is looking for a greener pasture. And as a child, I do not understand why do people go for the greener grass? And I would wonder how green is the grass in the greener pasture? Why do they need a greener grass for? Can they not make their grass greener instead of going to some place else? All these questions I have kept to myself for I am not allowed to listen or join in the conversation of the elders. So I promised myself that when I grow up, I will go to the greener pasture to have my questions answered.

Now that I am all grown up, I have totally forgotten this promise I have made to myself several years ago. Maybe because I found the answers somewhere along my journey.

Experience taught me that if I want to achieve something, I should act upon it, right here, right now. Because time waits for no one and I might miss an important opportunity to realize my goals. Waiting for the right time or finding the right place to do something does not guarantee one's success. Procrastinating the things that I can do now is like delaying and compromising my chance to a life better.

And I learned that better life is not like some treasure chests that is buried in some place no one knows. We all have everything that we need in our hands to make our grass greener, to have a better life. All we have to do is realize this potential, maximize our resources and take every opportunity that comes our way. With the right attitude, positive outlook, hard work and determination, grass is greener wherever life takes us.

So why do people search endlessly for a greener grass? It is their discontentment in where they are and in what they have that pushes them to seek and hope for greener pasture. What they don't realize is that they are where they ought to be and have all the power to make their lives better. After all, the quality of our life is the result of our decisions and choices. We can choose to make our own greener grass now or live in discontentment while waiting for the rainbow to appear to find the pot of gold. The choice is yours to make.
