Gardening tips: How to start bedding plants

Professional landscapers use bedding plants to create an inviting impression. Use these time-honored tips for quick results, low maintenance and water conservation.

DESIGN

1. Use masking tape to outline the bed into a crescent or kidney shape. Avoid circles.
2. When adding color to shrubbery bed, follow hedge line.
3. Angle beds to welcome visitors.
4. Small thick beds generate bigger impact. Higher beds improve drainage & visibility.

SOIL PREP

1. Remove existing grass & weeds.
2. Add an aerator, like Vermiculite, to soil for fast root growth.
3. Reduce water & fertilizer run-off. Lace 90 days of Osmocote into soil.
4. Renew tired soil. Add finely ground compost or mulch. .

PLANTING

1. Position tall plants at rear and shorter in front & space 6-packs about 8" apart.
2. Adding a few granules of Grow Gel or Crystal Ice conserves water.
3. Pinch off compacted roots, drop plant into hole, then press soil firmly around base.
4. Water newly planted bed thoroughly to remove soil air pockets.
