How to assemble a NASCAR pit crew

In the world of NASCAR the car is only as good as your pit crew. This group of mechanics can consist of five to twenty members. Each member is responsible for one specific job. The pit crew is one of the most essential components of a race team. They are responsible for the car working properly and running smoothly. To create a good race team and crew you need at least the following people:

Crew Chief- His job is to communicate with the driver on how the car is handling, come up with a pit strategy, and over see everything that goes on in their pit stall.

Pit Crew Coach- The coach is assigned to train the crew so they are in great physical condition. He also assists in the coordination of pit stops.

Lollipop Man- This position is the sign holder. On pit road there are many stalls and the lollipop man lowers a sign with the cars number on it to remind the driver where to stop. By keeping the sign down the driver knows to keep a foot on the breaks. Also, reminds the driver to put the car in first gear and then raises the sign and signals for the car to leave the stall.

Jack Man- The job of Jack Man consists of jacking up the car for tire changes. On some pit crews they also take on the job of checking that all five lug nuts are on each tire.

Front Tire Changer- A tire changer is designated to two tires. He has to remove the old ones and replace them with new tires.

Rear Tire changer- A tire changer is designated to two tires. He has to remove the old ones and replace them with new tires.

Gas Man- Gas man's job is to fill the car with gasoline.

Catch Can Man- This job is to hold a small one gallon gas can and catch any overflow gasoline when the gas man is refilling the car.

Front Tire Carrier- A tire carrier, carries new tires into the stall and old tires out of the stall. The front tire carrier is usually responsible for cleaning debris from the grill. He can also be in charge of adding and removing the tape from the grill.

Rear Tire Carrier- In addition to carrying tires, the rear tire carrier is responsible for making adjustment on the rear track bar.

Fire Extinguisher Man- This position doesn't involve working on the car at all. The crew member doing this job stands with a hand held fire extinguisher, this to put out any fire that occurs while in the pit stall.

Starter Man- Stands ready with a tool used to start the car; this is in case the engine was to stall while on pit road. This position doesn't work on the car.

If your pit crew is assembled correctly, a pit stop will run smoothly. The smoother the pit the better the finish.
