Short stories: Children's stories

I'll never forget Thanksgiving day 1992. On that special day my mom's Thanksgiving dinner Turkey came up missing! I remember when I first realized that the Turkey was nowhere to be found, thinking, "how are we suppose to have Thanksgiving without the Turkey and where did it go?" Where indeed!

We had many family members visit us that day. There was my very overweight Uncle Ernie. I called him Fat Albert behind his back. He loved food and it showed! Another relative that showed up was my Aunt Vera and boy was she ugly! She also had beady eyes! I never really trusted her. Cousin Tim was also there. Mom had told me that he once spent time in prison. I avoided him at every turn. Talk about a scary man! Last but not least was my Grandpa Samuel. He worried me! He would sometimes forget things that he had just said. He would also pick things up and misplace them. This seemed to happen every day back then.

When Uncle Ernie, Aunt Vera, Cousin Tim, and Grandpa Samuel arrived, my mom and dad greeted them and seemed very happy to see them all. I wasn't! I hid! I called my loving dog Chester and we went upstairs to my room. I remember laying on my bed, with Chester, and hearing all the noise below. "What are they all so happy about?" I thought. I mean, sure, we get to eat some really good food, but, I had to put up with my visiting relatives!

It seemed but a minute since I had went upstairs and laid on my bed with Chester. My mom later told me that it had been about two hours when she came upstairs and woke me up. She asked me if I was okay. "Okay?" I thought, "with all of those crazy people downstairs!" I answered, "I'm fine." I then asked mom where Chester was. She told me that when she came upstairs my door was open so Chester must have went downstairs somewhere. My mom then told me one of the worst things I had ever heard up to that point in my life. She said, "The turkey is missing!" I replied, "well I don't have it, I was asleep!" My mom rolled her eyes and then darted down stairs, yelling behind her, "you can come down and visit any minute young man!" I thought, "I will, but only after I gather a few things."

During that time in my life, I fancied myself being a detective of sorts. I mean, I watched the TV show COPS a few times. I even snuck and watched NYPD Blue when my parents thought I was asleep.

I gathered my detective gear and began my investigation. I had my trusty magnifying glass. Every good sleuth needs one of those! I had my pad of paper, well sort of. It was
