Poetry: Picnics

by Jon Coe

Created on: April 19, 2008

Blanket spread out on the grass
picnic basket opened, at last
Jars of jam
jellied things and deviled ham

"Pass the butter." Mother asks
Father interrupts, "Pass the flask"
Ants are crawling
bees are buzzing, I am drooling

Crackers stuffed with cheeses
spring time is full of breezes
"Get the napkins!"
Mother shouts, "While you're at it, pick some catkins!"

Oh yes, memories of picnics past
cow patties and farm creatures vast
"Let's get out of here!"
My mother grabs the basket and runs in fear

Venturing to another field, we tread
cucumber sandwiches, with wheat bread
Multitudes of cheeses
pickles, gherkins, chutney and whatever palate pleases

Butterflies, birds and rabbits bounding
paper plates, tea cups and plastic cutlery resounding
"Did you pack the sun tan lotion?"
Mother asks, rummaging with commotion

Buttercups, daisies and four leaf clovers
tea cakes, muffins and hungry gophers
"Where's my sandwich gone?"
Father exclaims, with protruding tongue

Picnics are the greatest thing
back to nature, let us dance and sing
Puffy white clouds turning gray
Run for cover, have a nice day
