Technology is so prevalent in today's world and such a part of this generation. From children all the way to adults, we are all on-line constantly making friends, sharing, and researching. However, the Internet is mostly used as a means of communication with the outside world. We all know and have heard that this world is not a safe place anymore, so a lot of parents are contempt with allowing their children even as early as the pre-teen years to access friends on the Internet believing that because there is no direct contact with other individuals that it can be considered safe.
Beware! I have done some studying when it comes to Internet safety and yet cannot truly explain how it all works but one thing I have learned through out my search for knowledge, and that is: the Internet is not truly safe! I understand how it has made it possible for individuals to connect with one another through a computer and a simple connection but be wise in doing so. Not everyone that is out there is just looking for a friend. There are predators out there and no one is exempt.
You can communicate with friends and make new ones but keep the following things in mind: You don't have to give away your true identity, pen names can be used. Never give away any personal information that can help someone track you down; from your age, job, school names, extra curricular activities, etc. When posting pictures make sure that there are no clues in them that could guide a predator to your area. Though your settings may be private there are computer hackers out there that can break the codes. Don't ever share or post information that you fear could fall into the wrong hands.
I call out to all teens and their parents that may be reading this article. Visit www.isafe.com, a site created especially for the awareness of Internet safety. Teens can go through the program and then teach friends and relatives about all the different things we must be aware of when posting and or communicating on the Internet. Parents may also get on and go through the program to teach others about the things to keep in mind when in use of the Internet.
It has been one of the greatest inventions ever, to have the opportunity to communicate with just about any one at the touch of a keyboard. Yes, let's enjoy what has been given to us but let us be wise about it and stay safe and keep our families safe.
