Reflections: The top 10 things you want to do in your life

by Bethany Vanderzand

Created on: April 18, 2008

Personally, I think this article should be titled "The top 10 things you want to do in THIS life", for I believe it is but one of many more (lives) to come, and it will also help me to narrow my spectrum to the allotted ten (as opposed to 30 or 4,812). I'd like to make it known that I intend for this to be more than just a list - in fact, I mean to achieve each of the goals I set here before me. For what is the use in dreaming if you aren't willing to take steps toward grasping those dreams by the balls? The following is my list, in no order of importance.

1) Learn to play the violin. I am a guitarist and a singer, and I thoroughly enjoy working in those two mediums; however, my husband is a fiddler, and I would dearly love to be able to play violin duets together. Not only do I think it a sensational instrument, but it would be a personal gift to my husband, and our street-performing would profit better.

2) Raise children. A pretty commonplace answer, yet true nonetheless. I don't know if anything could give me greater pleasure than being a mother and creating my own family. Although, if the state of the world gets any worse, I'm not sure I'm going to want to raise children in such an environment. Still, I have a strong natural instinct to nurture and procreate. I think having children would be a wonderful adventure, and the more love that is in my life, the better.

3) Write a book for my children. I am a writer (obviously) and my husband is a story teller - he's dyslexic, and therefore horrifying when quipped with the pen, but he has created so many beautiful tales - and together, I would love for us to construct a book of fables for our children to cherish. I've been sketching almost as long as I've been writing, so I could illustrate the pages as well. It would be a one-of-a-kind piece of literature and art that our children could treasure forever.

4) Own Friesian horses. I have had an affinity for animals my entire life, especially horses. Their grace and power inspires and awes me, and riding and caring for these creatures has always fulfilled my spirit. The Friesian horse is a part of my husband's culture and heritage (as he is Friesian), and they are a particularly handsome breed - light draft horses whose hair is true black like the Arabian. I would love to own a team of them.

5) Live in the country. I was born a city girl, and so am not very impressed by the city at all. Cities are too fast, too loud, too crowded, and too separated from nature for my taste.
