In a perfect world it would be nice to be verbally and emotionally rewarded by the boss or corporation, but in reality, most of us will have to settle for the money, which in turn, provides a means to survive on this planet.

The employer who rewards you with a pay increase is speaking to you directly in terms of a financial reward with a large raise or a small raise.

A small raise could be due to budgetary concerns or how much the employers values your job performance.

I would take a large raise to mean being rewarded for doing an outstanding job, a large profit margin and/or being considered that valuable within your industry to lure you to another job.

I think we all would like our employer to tell us we are doing a great job, but think of it this way: Just like in a family, not everyone is demonstrative of their feelings, but their actions indicate otherwise.

In positions where you are an underling, the tendency is to look at the boss as an authority figure or perhaps a parent for acknowledgment. This expectation of a boss to be a surrogate parent to you is totally unrealistic and I blame tv and the movies for fostering this fantasy.

It takes maturity, and other interests outside the job to realize that your boss is just another human being who is out for his or herself, too.

The great thing about living in America is that you can always move on to another job whether for personal and financial gains.

Recognition in the job place is fleeting; there is always someone else in the wings waiting to be the new star of the company.

How many times have you seen or heard of someone who was the golden boy or golden girl only to be replaced by a newer image?

This is where self esteem comes in; you know you are doing a great job, but perhaps this is not where you belong for the long haul and there is hope.

What is great about living in America is the opportunity to explore new options. You don't have to be deadlocked in a unrewarding job, if you don't want to, depending on your circumstances.

In the meantime I am going to do the best job I can do, collect my paycheck, enjoy my life, and look around for a new job with more MONEY, and opportunity.
