Animal Testing: Stop the Cruelty

Like me, many people have animals. I grew up with three dogs, two birds, a turtle, and a cat. My family and I are so attached to these animals and couldn't ever imagine anything dangerous happening to them nor any other animal. Like they say, a dog is a man's best friend. However, after one day in junior high, I was introduced to animal testing and experimenting in a horrible way. I saw an advertisement of different animals with makeup smeared over their faces and big bold letters that said "STOP ANIMAL TESTING". For years, that image still remains in my head. It was a rude awakening that I have never forgot, but glad I saw. It introduced me to something that I never knew about. I started asking myself, "what was animal testing," and "why were they wearing makeup? Animals don't wear makeup". I quickly learned, that depending on which laboratory that rat, baboon, and dog were living in, they did wear makeup; or, have their eyes held open with chemicals poured in them to see how long it takes to make them go blind. Questions quickly came, and left unanswered because it wasn't a topic that was talked about much. I never learned about it in school, nor heard about it on the news. Animal testing is something that most people know about, but don't bring it up. Corporations and companies don't want their actions being spread because more people would actually have to face the truth. Animal testing is cruel and inhumane. According to Wikipedia, "Animal testing or animal research is the use of non-human animals in scientific experimentation. It is estimated that 50 to 100 million vertebrate animals worldwide from zebrafish to non-human primates are used annually." Over hundreds of years, animal testing has been going on and millions of innocent animals have had to die. Animals are suffering and being tested for human needs; however, animals have rights too. Animal research and testing should be illegal for both medical and commercial venues. Its unnecessarily harmful for the animal when there are other ways to test products, and those ways should be reinforced. For example, voluntary testing, and clinical trials, just to name a few.

Animal testing is harmful on our environment and society. Many times when companies want to try a new product, they ask the government for funding. Whether the company needs a facility, animals, or anything else to conduct the experiment, governments can give funding. Then, society ends up paying for it in
