The Difference
A homeless man sits
on the curb, begging
for something to eat.
Begrudgingly I shove
my hands in my pockets;
there's some loose change.
(He'll probably just drink it up)
Flip-flop ~ shoes coming
apart at the seams, into
the burger joint. He emerges
with a hamburger wrapped in blue.
(So I was wrong)
Sitting back on the curb,
unwraps his prize with
relish ~ looks around ~ then
slowly wraps it up again.
(What, is he crazy)
Crossing the street, he hands
the blue wrapped burger to
a dirty, barefoot child
who unwraps the meal
and eats voraciously.
Homeless man sits back
down on his curb.
(I feel very small)
