Poetry: Alcoholism

Powerless

Looking in your face
I see pain, anguish,
fear, deceit and anger,
compliments of the bottle.

Something went
terribly wrong ~
when did it start,
do you know?

Only a resemblance
to the woman I know,
you stand shaking
before me, head down.

Where will your bottom
take you this time,
and will you live to tell?

Looking in your face
I see myself and realize
that I finally understand
powerlessness.
