I made a trip to London in 2003. I traveled by ferry and coach. I arrived in London's Victoria station. My destination was Willesden in north London. Upon arriving i was tired from nearly 16 hours travel, even though it was a nice day, i decided to get a taxi. I went to get a black cab, i asked the driver to take me to my destination - his reply was a loud aggressive NO. I just said okay. I got a different cab, and on my way to Willesden i got thinking why the driver said no to my request to be driving to Willesden. After much thinking, the only reason i could think of is 'i am Irish and the driver was English/British, an old man the cab driver was, and maybe he had bad memories of the Troubles between Ireland & England'. I could be wrong but that is the only reason i could think of as to why he would refuse to bring me to Willesden.
Whilst in Willesden, i asked another man, a much younger man this time for some directions. The man just looked through me and kept walking. Maybe some people just don't like the Irish or its just a problem in England, i don't know. All in all my time in London was not a great experience. Although we did visit a nice little cafe in Willesden and the old man that ran the place was a nice man.
I should mention the reason i went to London in the first place was to live there - after two days in London, i decided to come home. Life moves too fast there, too many people living there for my liking. The trains, buses, tubes etc are crammed with people. I do hope to return to London in the future. I have built up friendships with a few people in London, and i would like to return to visit them. Would i ever live there, not in a million years - i like been at home, and at home ill stay.
Maybe when i visit next time - i will get to meet all the nice people from London, as i am sure there is loads upon loads.
I would recommend London to anyone, as i myself am not a travel person and if i had been in New York instead of London, i would have still found faults. It is worth to mention i was also sick when i made my trip to London, so maybe that is why i found trip unpleasant. There is great things to be seen in all corners of London, from eastend history to westend shows. Its the city where the worlds most famous serial killer struck many times - Jack The Ripper. Its also a great city for shopping. So give London a try if your looking for a short break, i am sure you will enjoy it more than i did first time around - there's always next time for me.
