Phoenix may be a long way from New York City, but the local performing arts theaters offer an entertaining array of productions at a much more affordable price. There are many theaters in Phoenix ranging from amateur children's theater to Broadway touring companies. No matter your tastes or your budget, Phoenix has something to offer you. Here are some great theaters to check out:
Professional Theater
The Grady Gammage Auditorium houses most of the Broadway touring productions that run through Phoenix. The theater offers current hits and old favorites. Each production runs for several performances over a few weeks, depending on the tour. Tickets range in price, but usually run between $30 and $80. Save money by asking about student discounts and seeing matinee performances.
Childsplay is a professional theater group that specializes in children's theater productions. Their past productions of plays like "The Velveteen Rabbit" and "The Quiltmaker's Gift" have earned them local acclaim. This theater is a fantastic place to bring children. Ticket prices vary. For more information see www.childsplayaz.org.
Community Theater
Hale Centre Theater produces several major musicals and comedies each season. The cast is comprised of adult non-equity actors. A highlight is their annual production of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. This is a great theater to check out for affordable tickets and quality entertainment. Tickets begin at only $17.
Children's Theater
If you're on a tighter budget, but still looking for a great production or if you have children and would like a kid-friendly production, check out Valley Youth Theater. The managing director, Bobb Cooper, has done some amazing work with the children who participate at the theater. Some alumni actors of VYT are "American Idol" winner, Jordin Sparks, "You're the One that I Want" winner of the role Danny in "Grease", Max Crumm, and many other successful young people.
Dinner Theater
Copperstate Dinner Theater performs at the Phoenix Greyhound Park. It is one of the premiere dinner theaters in Arizona. They specialize in comedies and musicals. Director couple Peter J. Hill and his wife Noel Irick have earned numerous stage awards in Phoenix for their work. Tickets for dinner and a show are $39.95 each.
