In 1999, casting agents for the upcoming film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (released in the USA as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) discovered Emma through her Oxford theater teacher and she was cast as Hermione Granger in 2001. She was nominated for five awards for her performance in the movie and won the Young Artist Award for the category of Leading Young Actress.
One year later, Emma starred in the second installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. She won a Silver Otto Award for her performance.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, released in 2005, saw Emma nominated for three awards. She won a bronze Otto Award and become the youngest person ever to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue magazine later that year.
In 2007, the fifth installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was released. Emma won the inaugural National Movie Award for Best Female Performance and the UK Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award for Best Movie Actress. Later that year, Emma left imprints of her hands, feet, and wand in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California. Also in 2007, Emma starred in her first non-Harry Potter role in the BBC Television movie, Ballet Shoes.
As of this publication, Emma is scheduled to appear in the final installments of the Harry Potter series: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2008), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One (2010) and Part Two (2011).
