As parents we want the best for our children. We try and make sure that we follow all the safety instructions on car seats and other baby equipment, but we often overlook one very important part of a child's development, nutrition. We assume that children get the vitamins and minerals they need from the food they consume, but any parent knows just how unpredictable a child's eating habits can be. As adults we are able to monitor what goes into our bodies and how we are feeling, children rely on their parents to do this for them. In an article "Vitamins for Children" (found on The Vitamins and Nutrition Center website www.vitamins-nutrition.org) Dr. George Obikoya discusses the importance that vitamins play in the well fair of children.

Vitamins are essential to keep the human body functioning properly. It is virtually impossible to eat a completely balanced diet all of the time. Children's bodies are constantly growing and changing; consuming necessary vitamins is crucial to cognitive and physical development.

There are several ways that parents can ensure that their children are receiving all the vitamins and minerals they need. One way of boosting a child's vitamin intake is by feeding them organic foods. Organic foods are grown without harmful pesticides, and organic farming practices do not leach natural mineral contents from the soil they farm on. By feeding children organic fruits and vegetables we naturally increase their intake of natural vitamins and minerals. People often find they prefer the taste of organic food to highly processed food. Trying organic versions of your child's favorite foods can lead to healthier eating habits.

Another way to sneak extra vitamins into a child's diet is to only give them 100% juice. Many of the drinks children consume are filled with sugar and caffeine, and can actually have an adverse effect on mineral absorption. According to Gerber's website (www.Gerber.com) drinking 100% real fruit juices, like apple juice, can actually boost levels of vitamin C and aid in the absorption of iron. Also drinking one percent or skim milk provides vital nutrients without added fat.

There are several over the counter vitamin options for children. Before a parent starts their child on a vitamin regime they should consult their pediatrician. Parents should also be aware of what their children are consuming in daycare or school. A study conducted by University of Miami Miller School of Medicine demonstrated the positive effects of implementing healthier menus in daycares in Miami-Dade county (www.medicinenet.com a division of webMD contact Kate Hahn 212-624-3700). Increasing a child's water intake can also aid in vitamin and mineral absorption.

Most physicians agree the best way for a child to get vitamins and minerals is by eating a healthy,well-balanced diet. Unfortunately we live in a fast-food nation, so if you know your child's diet is not meeting their nutritional needs then adding a supplemental vitamin is a safe bet. Over the counter vitamins are safe for children unless consumed in large quantities. Often children's vitamins are made in fun shapes and great tasting so parents should keep them out of reach to ensure proper dosage. The Broward County Public School website www.browardschools.com (754-321-0000) has many helpful tips on proper nutrition and vitamin intake for preschool and school age children.

Every parent wants their child to be healthy and happy. By taking a closer look at their vitamin and mineral consumption we can help give them the best possible start to healthy living.
