Testimonies: Being an identical twin

Being a twin is probably one of the most unique experiences that not everyone has the opportunity to try. It's funny, but I was actually the shy one. No one can ever believe that now, but really I was. My sister, Janet, was so brave, she could talk to anyone and she had no fear. When i was little, I always wanted to grow up to be like her because, to me, she was like a lion with red hair that seemed to be the king of the forest. Well, in her case we'll make her a queen; otherwise, she might get mad at me if she reads this article.

Anyway, it was pretty cool, especially considering I was extremely shy. It was nice because everywhere I went I had my best friend with me. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that my mom told the school not to put us in the same classes after kindergarten. I guess she figured I had to be less reliant upon my sister and force me into developing my social skills. That was extremely difficult for me. I honestly don't think my mom realized how difficult it really was for me, but I remember lying in bed at night crying myself to sleep because I had no friends. It wasn't until I was in second grade when I got my first birthday party invitation from one of the kids in my class. I guess it was then that I started to be a little more independent. Not much, but a little.

Well, that same year, my sister Linda got married and then got pregnant. My sister Janet and I were sitting on the floor playing with dolls when I heard Janet say, "I hope Linda has a girl."

I replied, "I hope she has a girl too."

Janet looked at me shocked and excited, "What? What'd you just say?"

I replied calmly, "I said,'I hope she has a girl too.'"

Janet said, "Jeanne, I thought 'I hope Linda has a girl.' I didn't say it out loud."

I said, "Yes, you did, Janet, I heard you."

She said, "No, I didn't. Honest. You read my mind."

I said, "Oh, come on...really?"

She said, "Really, you did. Look, let's just try it again. You tell me what I'm thinking."

I looked at her in the eyes and in a whisper I heard her say, "You can't do it again."

I repeated what I heard, "You think I can't do it again."

Shocked, she said try again.

Again, I looked at her and heard her think, "No, maybe I want Linda to have a boy and not a girl. No, I really want her to have a girl. I don't want another brother like David."

I repeated what she thought, and then we started to play games with trying to read each others mind. It was fun. We'd go to bed at night and try to have the same dreams, and the funny thing
