Potential. The PlayStation 3 has potential. For four to five hundred dollars, you can purchase an amazing, powerful, and upgradeable console. The PS3's capabilities expand with each firmware update.
The Wii is full of potential as well. Potential for games that utilize its unique control scheme with flair and gusto. Potential for games that sport outdated graphics.
The PS3 has some genuinely fun games. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction are a load of fun to play. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII will be released later this year. The games coming exclusively to the PS3 are from franchises that consistently deliver excellent stories with high production values. Metal Gear and Final Fantasy will give us a bar by which we can measure the quality of future games. Metal Gear has already set a high bar by using all of a blu-ray disc's storage capacity to contain a long story and impressive graphics. Games look absolutely amazing in high definition as well. The possibilities for games are endless with the PS3.
The Wii has Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Zelda: Twilight Princess at the top of an ever expanding catalog of games. The three games listed above use the Wii hardware to its potential. Unfortunately, these games have maxed the Wii's graphics capabilities. Games produced by third party publishers tend to look just a modicum better than Gamecube games. Many of the third party games make poor or sloppy use of the Wiimote and nunchuk. High quality games seem to be produce primarily by Nintendo itself.
The PS3 has many options for entertainment should you find yourself in the mood for a movie or music. It can stream music and video from any media server that you have set up. Movies, music, and pictures can be stored directly on the hard drive for quick access. The best video feature possible is the built in blu-ray drive. Watching a blu-ray movie on a high definition tv will make you feel like a king. The picture is so clear and the sound so crisp with an hdmi cable connecting your PS3 to you hd tv. Did I mention how good things look on a 32 inch high definition screen? Phew, let me take a moment. Moving on, Sony has indicated that there will soon be video content available for download from the PlayStation store.
The Wii's media capabilities? You can have fun watching a dvd on one. Oh, my mistake. You can't. The Wii can only play games. Games are great, but I like to have as few electronics attached to my tv as possible. My PS3 can play games, blu-ray and dvd, music, and downloaded content. The Wii, not so much.
I vote for the PS3 because of its potential and longevity. It can be your media center and console system all in one. The PS3 is amazing and will continue to improve and grow all through its life span. The Wii has already hit its high notes. Its potential lies with developers that use the wiimote and nunchuk controls in innovative ways. It has no real potential elsewhere.
