Whether you want to hear it or not, the sacrament of marriage isn't what it used to be. Married couples run a 50% chance of eventually becoming divorced couples. Many of these divorces will occur during middle age. What does this have to do with prostitution? Plenty. As we all know, the profession of prostitution involves the sale of sexual gratification in the most, shall we say, biblical sense of the term. Strip clubs and pornography also cater to these urges, but without the literal act of intercourse.
I'm going to be quite candid with the following statement. It is much easier for a single/ divorced female to find partners for casual sexual relationships than it is for divorced or single males. It's a part of our human make-up. An unattached heterosexual male is much more likely to be willing to engage in sex with any female deemed "available," regardless of physical appearance. On the other hand, available females are very selective. If a male isn't tall, dark, wealthy, or particularly good-looking, he will be rejected; hence the popularity of strip clubs, the multi-billion dollar porn industry, and shops that sell alternate materials as a substitute. All of the above enterprises overwhelmingly cater to the masculine gender.
As a result, when middle-aged males who have put on weight down in the gut, lost some hair, or were never handsome in the first place suddenly find themselves single again, it often becomes a case where sex will not happen again without an exchange of money. This also occurs even if a male is young but unattractive. I suspect that this is the very core; the very reason, that prostitution is said to be the world's oldest profession. Of course, one can find a "lady of the night" in just about any city with a sizable population. The problem, however; is twofold: In most places, it's illegal. If one is caught soliciting a streetwalker with a monetary offer for sex, he'll be arrested and fined. The other and far worse scenario is the risk for sexually transmitted diseases, which can range from a simple case of Chlamydia all the way up to a deadly AIDS infection.
One legal way around this is for such ladies to refer to themselves as "escorts." There is no law that prohibits the exchange of funds for dating. What happens on the date is between the "escort" and the paying customer. However, the risks for STD's remain. Another popular tactic is to masquerade a business as a "massage parlor." Again, if the clients of such places receive more than
