Perhaps the more appropriate title for this article would be "How does God get (and keep) OUR attention?" To assume that we have to "Do" something to be noticed by our Creator is in conflict with everything the Bible teaches about the nature of God.
The bible teaches us that He knew each of us when we were still in the womb, He watched us grow in the darkness as our bodies were knit together. He knows the number of hair on our heads, He knows our hearts, He knows what we will do before we do it. From the beginning, God's attention was on His creation. He noticed that it was not good for man to be alone, and created a companion for him. He came down in the cool of the day to spend time with His children. He spoke with our forefathers, provided for His children in the desert, led them, protected and provided for them. He hears the prayers of His children, He seeks them, He loves us.
He so desires a relationship with us that time and time again He demonstrated His love for us collectively and individually. Even if we do not acknowledge it, accept it or thank Him for it, He sends the sun to warm us each day. He sends the rains to refresh us, He feeds us, heals us, protects us and sustains us.
His mercy is new each morning, His love is as boundless as His creation. He has revealed Himself through the words prophets, through the teachings of scriptures, through the example of our Lord Jesus, through the Spirit who stirs our hearts, through the words, hands, hearts and love of our fellow believers. If all that isn't enough to catch your attention, He has created a bounty of beauty and variety in the natural world around us. God has done infinite things to get our attention (and keep it) but what God will not do is to remove our free will. We are free to turn our attention to Him; to return His love... or not.
God made the first overture, proved Himself true throughout the generations, sent His Son to secure our freedom, welcomes us into His kingdom, blesses us with goodness, beauty, bounty...and yet we wonder how to get His attention? We have had it all along...
But if you ask "How do we get God's delight?" that is easy to answer. Freely come to Him and receive His gifts. Accept His invitation through Jesus to have communion with Him. At that doing, all heaven rejoices, because the Father's heart is filled with joy when His precious child turns to Him.
