"Sprinklers"
Tiny, dancing lights in a sequined
Fourth of July maneuver that
stream across the sky in blinding brilliance.
From in the hands of children they tower
upwards, burning and brilliant and sizzling
their strange noise
into the inky blackness that surrounds.
The adults watch from the curb,
disinterested,
waiting for the real fireworks to begin.
Waiting for the real show to begin.
Disinterested.
The children dance around, delighted,
invigorated, without ability to
see past the simple beauty of the evening.
The children play with their fire sprinklers,
their own personal display of
greatness.
The adults continue waiting for the real show to begin.

In the hot days of summer, it's every child's dream.

not the safest place to be.
I use to chase them all away
but now just wait to see.
