How to Fend off Holiday Weight Gain

As the weather warms and the kids begin to finish school, you realize that the holidays are just around the corner summer holidays that is. All too often we associate holiday weight gain with the winter months. The approach of the Christmas season and New Year's celebrations put us on high alert each and every year. But as a personal trainer and active living coach I have always found that "summer" is harder on my clients waistlines than the winter holidays will ever be. Here are a few tips to help you maintain all of the hard won results you have spent months working towards:

1) BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR ACTIVITY LEVEL This is where most people run into trouble. They assume they will naturally be more active now that the weather is nicer, and therefore relax their regular gym routine. The reality is when hot, humid weather strikes the chances of you hitting the trails for a monster hike are slim to none. Lounging by the pool and taking the odd dip does NOT count as exercise. So keep in mind that gyms are air-conditioned making warm weather workouts much nicer inside. And any outdoor activities you do sneak in will be the bonus that keeps you looking better than ever!

2) KNOW THAT YOU WILL EAT MORE It is amazing how many people completely forget about the amount of socializing that occurs in the summer months. From family reunions, to work gatherings, to neighborhood parties, there isn't a week that goes by without something going on. All of that extra social time leads to more snacking (forgotten calories) and desserts (oh I've been so good so far it just won't count calories). STOP fooling yourself and set up a plan for summer social occasions now. If you want the creamy salads than skip the appetizers. If you just can't say no to the fresh fruit flan for dessert than say no to the bun with your burger. Off setting calories to enjoy what is most important to you is the best way to get through the holidays with your waistline in check.

3) DON"T FORGET ABOUT THE LIQUIDS Here is the real plan buster. The sweet calorie laden cocktails that are on every backyard patio from mid June to Labor Day. These are the forgotten treats; the calories that don't seem to count; and the ones that play havoc with the fit of your swimsuit. So DON'T forget to add these calorie estimates into your general health and fitness plan this summer. Does that mean pushing a little harder at the gym (in the cool air-conditioning!); maybe leaving the dessert and appetizers for others; or skipping the cocktails all together and opting to be the DD now and then? Whatever your choice keeping these sneaky calories in mind when thinking about the warm fun filled night ahead will help ensure that by the time Labor Day arrives you will be in your best shape yet.
