Bobby Allison was one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time. That isn't just ones opinion, it is a fact. With 84 recordable NASCAR wins in his career makes him raking third all time. Only two other NASCAR drivers can say that. Let's just start by looking back at Bobby's career.
Bobby first NASCAR event was in 1961 at Daytona International Speedway. Bobby began getting his feet wet in this series and managed to score his first win on July 12, 1966 on the Oxford Plains Speedway. This would just be the start of what would be a great driving career. Over the next month and a half he also won races at Islip Speedway and Beltsville Speedway. Three outstanding wins in the 1966 year. But hw did not stop there. Over his 22 year career he recorded 85 total wins, three times Daytona winner as well as three time runner up at Daytona.
Bobby was the first driver to win $100,000 in a Winston Cup Grand National Event. The event was, well of course Daytona in 1982. As most people know, Bobby was liked by his fellow drivers as well as the fans. He was voted the most popular driver six times in his career. Three of them came in the years 1971-1973 and the other three came ten years later in 1981-1983. He also won the Winston Cup Series in 1983 and was runner up in the series five times. In his career he managed to win over 7 million dollars.
On June 19, 1988, Bobby Allison would enter the Pocono race as he has in years past. This race would change Bobby's career forever. On that day, Bobby had a near fatality crash. This crash left him with injuries that left him to retire. He left a legacy of fine racing and was elected into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993. With that honor, Bobby leaves the NASCAR with years of wonderful memories.
After leaving NASCAR as a driver, Bobby just could not stay away from the sport all together. From 1990 through 1996, Bobby owned teams that would race in the NASCAR events. Some of the notable driver's that drove for Bobby was Derrick Cope, Jimmy Spencer, Mike Alexander and Hut Stricklin. Though non of these drivers had the career that Bobby had, it still kept Bobby in the NASCAR family.
