Enough already with the complaining about President George Bush's veto of federal funds for stem cell research. His veto does not eliminate research - it means that you and I do not pay for this pseudoscience. Private research can go on and it should go on. Profit drive is the only reason drugs are created in this world - the same thing is true of stem cell research. If there is money to be made - someone will look to make it.

Curious how the big guys are not pushing this research themselves. Pfizer and Merck have steered far clear of stem cells. And these are companies that have pushed drugs that they know are not only worthless but may sometimes be harmful. Big pharma "is letting the smaller companies work and realize the potential." says Dr. Hans Keirstead, associate professor at Reeve-Irvine Research Center at the University of California at Irvine.

Greedy Big pharma doesn't let anyone 'realize potentials'. They know stem cell therapy is over-hyped and they are not wasting their efforts and they regularly pump upwards of $800 million into one new drug. $800 million into a very long process that very well could be fruitless. If, as proponents claim, stem cell work may cure everything from Parkinson's to damaged spines, don't you think a private company would jump at the chance to fund that?

Remember another wonderful government health initiative - President Richard Nixon's 1971 declaration of 'War on Cancer'? Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US today, only heart disease kills more. 50% of men come down with cancer, 33% of women, and 25% of deaths are from cancer. Doesn't seem that government backed research when health is concerned is all that it's cracked up to be.

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) said, "People with Parkinson's no longer have it.... People with spinal cord injuries are walking." Both statements were lies. Dennis Turner's Parkinson's returned and Jacki Rabon went to Portugal for an implant of cells taken from her nose; olfactory ensheathing glia. Anyone who would lie to get funding must have other motives. I've had better success with herbs.

Let private industry explore this research if they think that it's promising. I don't think that they will.
