Views on abortion

by Carisa Silvesan

Yale University staff reporter Martine Powers exposed a senior art major today in her article, "For senior, abortion a medium for art, political discourse. The University server has received so many hits this morning that it almost crashed. Abortion as art: This is where our legalized abortion has led us.

According to the article, Aliza Shvarts artificially inseminated herself several times, though no exact number was ever given, and then self induced abortions through abortifacient drugs and herbal rememdies. She proceeded to video tape her abortion experiences while laying in her bathroom tub. To top this off, Aliza has saved the blood from each abortion so she can put them on display for others to see. Although the drugs and herbs Aliza used to abort her many children, for the sake of art, have dangerous side effects, she never once consulted a physician.

The School of Art lecturer, Pia Lindman has yet to comment on a project that she is responsible for advising the seniors on. And the school itself has done nothing about this. But, really what can they do? What she did is perfectly legal, therefore the blood is on our government's hands and our hands as well. Even the Pro Choice advocates are not supporting this. The "art project" will display the blood and the videos of the abortions Aliza performed on herself.

What does this say about our society? What does this say about post abortive women? What does this say about our value for life and respect for the human body, let alone others? Does this senior realize the absurdity of what she is trying to accomplish? How are post abortive women and women who have miscarried or those who can't conceive affected by this act?

This just shows how valueless human life has become in our society. It puts post abortive women in a light of cold hearted murderers who care nothing for what they've done which, for the majority of them, is just not true. This shows the world how little respect we have for life in the United States of America. Extremely self indulged in what she wants, Aliza appears to have no comprehension as to what she has done to her body and to her children and how she has affected all these women. It makes one wonder how she even got accepted into an Ivy League school in the first place.

No matter what side of the abortion debate you're on this should be the end game for abortion without any limits. It should be illegal for someone to purposefully get themselves pregnant just so they can abort the life inside of them. Political action should be going on right now.

Everyone should be extremely outraged by this event and call the Yale Art Department immediately at 203-432-2600. The student, Aliza Shvarts should be expelled immediately for her unethical behavior and the School of Art lecturer, Pia Lindman who is also the senior project advisor, should immediately be fired. But, whatever your views, use your voice and let the school know how appalling this is and what you think should happen.
