TV show reviews: The Gilmore Girls

The Gilmore Girls is a television show that ran from 2000-2007. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, it starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as a fast-talking mother-daughter duo who are best friends.

The fictional New England town of Stars Hollow is the backdrop for the quip-happy, pop-culture referencing drama. It is what everyone pictures an idyllic Connecticut town to be, tiny, beautiful, and as kooky as it is charming. A place where no matter how fast technology may advance, the dwellers of Stars Hollow remain fiercely loyal to their powerful sense of community (which, in this age, is a dying art unto itself).

The (major) Characters:

Lorilai Gilmore (Lauren Graham): Raised in a household of privilege, born with a silver spoon in her mouth, all Lorilai Gilmore ever wanted growing up was the freedom to be herself. The restraints of the way her parents viewed "civilized society" were so tight; something eventually had to give. It gave; in the form of Lorilai getting pregnant at 16 and running away from home to live at the Independence Inn as a maid in Stars Hollow. She worked her way up to manager, eventually deciding to finally take the leap with her best friend Suki St. James to open her own inn. With much help, the two completely refurbished The Dragonfly Inn into a Zagat-rated tourist attraction.

Lorilai "Rory" Gilmore (Alexis Bledel): Since men name their offspring after themselves all the time, why can't women? That was the logic behind the choosing of Rory's name.

Rory begins as a docile, quiet, submissive over-achiever, but as she grows into her own as a woman, her relationship with Lorilai (Graham) becomes increasingly strained. We see how being your daughter's best friend can backfire for a mother as we watch Lorilai's reactions to Rory dating Jess, Rory having an affair that resulted in her loosing her virginity to Dean (Rory's married ex-boyfriend), and as the coe de grais, getting arrested for attempting to steal a boat with her college beau, Logan Huntzberger.

Rory goes from being a classic Type-A personality, to a classic Type-A personality trying to step off into the precipice of adulthood. The journies in her life all lead her to one conclusion; no matter how much you think you have control, things can change within the blink of an eye.

Lane Kim (Keiko Agena): Rory's best friend. Lane battles between her desperation of having an American upbringing and her obligation to her Korean family honor. Her need for teenage normalcy is so great that it causes
