Every night when I read to my daughter before bed, I find myself looking forward to choosing a book with her, not only because I know the gift I'm giving her by sharing literature, but also because she's got some really great books on her shelf! Children's literature has really come into its own in recent years and authors are raising the bar - no more "See Spot run!" Mix a few classics in with some modern hits and you're sure to build a library your child will treasure for years to come. And don't let the age recommendations fool you. My daughter is 13 months old and loves each and every one of these books. Here's a brief list of some favorites at our house:
Bats at the Beach by Brian Lies (ages 4-8)
Where do bats go on a warm, moonlit summer night? To the beach, of course! Put on some "moontan lotion" and follow a group of bats to the shore as they enjoy wing-boat races, bat kites, salted skeeters, and a lovely bonfire. Lies' charming rhymes and absolutely magical artwork will keep your little one engaged from the first page to the last.
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes (ages 4-8)
Lilly loves school and her teacher, Mr. Slinger. When her grandmother buys her a purple plastic purse that plays a song when it's opened, she can hardly wait to get to school to show everyone. But when Mr. Slinger confiscates Lilly's new treasure after one too many distractions, Lilly is devastated and decides to get even. Henkes' irrepressible little mouse will entertain parents and kids alike with her intense emotion and the sweet way she goes about making things right.
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems (ages 4-8)
This sneaky bird will try just about anything to get behind the wheel of that bus! You may quickly recognize your own little "pigeon" in the main character's struggle to get what he wants. Filled with dynamic line drawings and punchy text, this interactive story will have your kids absorbed from the very first page.
Olivia by Ian Falconer (ages 4-8)
The first in a delightful series of books about the many adventures of this precocious little piglet, your child will be introduced to Olivia's world. Join Olivia as she takes a trip to the beach to show off her amazing sand castle construction skills, goes to the museum to daydream about her favorite painting, tries a little artwork of her own on her bedroom wall, negotiates just the right number of bedtime stories, and searches for the perfect outfit. Your kids will love Olivia's matter-of-fact
