Poetry: Ironing

by Ethel Smith

Created on: April 17, 2008   Last Updated: January 12, 2009

I hardly iron

a thing anymore,

the laundry doesn't need it,

so that's one less chore.

But I can remember

a few years back,

washing that was crumpled

so clothes looked like a sack,

unless you would stand

slaving away,

working that iron

for most of the day.

Some things were easy

and simple to do,

pillowcases, tea cloths

and the odd dress or two

but oh those shirts

in crisp, cool cotton

they were such a pain,

from top to bottom.

Liberated now

from this boring task,

most materials are smooth,

soft as damask

but there is still a job

that has to be done

putting laundry away,

which is definitely no fun.
