The key to keeping a desk organized it to not let things pile up. Do not let things lie flat on the desk, because you will forever be lifting items to find something else, like a pen or the notes you scribbled while talking on the phone.
PEN CAN
Speaking of a pen, get a container specifically for pens and other long items like markers, a letter opener, scissors, etc. that are frequently used but always get lost under pieces of paper. The edge of this cup is also a great place to store your stapler remover jaws. You can use a standard pen cup from an office supply store or use a mug, glass, or small vase. All you need is something large enough that will not be top heavy.
VERTICAL FILE STORAGE
Next, think vertical storage. If you have special projects or frequently used files, consider getting a vertical file stand. These come in a variety of designs from wire to plastic to metal. The various slots are staggered so that you can see the label on each file. Storing files and papers vertically allows easy access, and prevents them from getting misplaced in a pile of paper. If you have multiple projects, or need to separate work and home, color code the projects with different colored file folders or different colored markers on the file tab.
SMALL PAPERS and NOTES
For the small notes and scratch pad pages that quickly gather on your desk, utilize a project board to store these items. Place a bulletin board or magnetic board on the wall near your desk, within arms reach. This will also help keep these papers off the desk, and on larger boards you can even group like notes together. For more organization, divide the board into columns or sections and create category labels. These labels can be for your different projects, or one for each member of your family. You can also use a spindle to store small paper items. Just stab them onto the spindle and they will not blow away or fall behind the desk.
NEW PAPER
Designate a drawer for printer paper and other specialty papers or labels. These items should be stored flat, which will help keep them from bending. Designating a drawer will make sure you can always find the paper you need so that multiple packages are not open at once. Also, it will help avoid wasting paper that gets bent edges or wrinkles.
IN BOX
Create a space to be considered an "In Box". This way, anything you put on the desk will go into this bin until it is filed away, thrown away or moved to its permanent home. You can purchase a tray from the office supply store, or designate a specific corner of the desk or use a box lid. This should be the only place on the desk with a pile of paper, and even this pile should be dealt with regularly.
With these items in their proper place, the various office accessories like a stapler or calculator will have adequate space on the desk top. The clutter will not cover your keyboard or take up your writing space, and be easily accessible when needed.
