Of course when we talk about classic TV science fiction we have to go back to the 60s. The decade that defined the sci fi era and to this day has had a profound effect on the science fiction of today. Of course we have to start out with the Twilight Zone, Rod Serlings surreal look fantasy which was way ahead of its time. Who could forget such memorable episodes such as "To Serve Man" in which a seemingly group of benevolent 8ft aliens who called themselves the Cannibits (notice the play on words there? Canibits sounds very close to Cannibals) came and helped us eliminate war and hunger on our beleaguered world. Little did we know that they were fattening us up for an ingredient for the soup. The Twilight zone provided us with surprise endings and a moral to each story. Another off shoot of the Twilight Zone is the Out Limits which brought us the same storylines as the Twilight Zone.
Of course we could not mention the 60s with out the master of sci-fi TV Iriwn Allen, who brought us such classics (some short lived)Lost In Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants and the Time Tunnel to name just a few. Although some ofIriwn Allens version of Sci-Fi could be considered more of a Saturday Morning TV fodder (such as Lost in Space) he brought the Sci-Fi genre to new heights in the 60s. Now comes the sci-fi to beat classic science fiction, and you know where we are headed with this one. Yes its the final frontier, to boldy go where no man has gone before. Star Trek. This is the one series that the studios actually called for a 2nd pilot, which was unheard of at that time and still is today. Gene Rodenberrys look in to the future was way ahead of its time and still is today.
No other series mixed different races together in equality and friendship. It has something for everybody, comedy, romance, adventure and of course the male bonding thing between its 3 main characters. Star Trek truly has gone where noone has gone before, over 40 years and still going strong.
Star Trek and its 5 offshoots and now an eleventh movie in the works will forever stand the test of time.
