Well, the first thing I have to do is to consult a lawyer about what the company had done to me. Employees in the government are protected by a law popularly known as "security of tenure." This is a law stating that every individual employee in the government can't be dismissed from his job without undergoing due process. An employee in the government can only be dismiss from his job the moment the verdict on a certain ground filed against him for dismissal is guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
In the private sector, security of tenure is seldom implemented, if not always. They usually have flexible company rules and regulation that can be amended or change any time they want to because the most important thing for them is the interest of their business.
Working in a private company is always performance based. The better your performance is the bigger the opportunity for you to rise up to the higher position. The higher the position, the bigger the salary, the better the benefits and it would mean more lucrative bonus or bonuses depending on your performance.
If you perform well, you have a guarantee, at least for a certain period of time that you can stay in the company. Most employees in the private sector are closely monitored. Employees who are not performing well are being reminded. Or those who are not performing well might be given warning/s in order for the employee to do better in his job or else he will be fired comes next evaluation report.
If you think you can't meet the expected performance from your present position anymore because of your age, try to ask a favor from your immediate supervisor that you be transferred to a job well suited to your capability. Because whether you accept it or not, as you grows old, you become slower, your reflexes are not as fast anymore when you were younger. And because of this, the company could use this as a ground for them to fire you.
Once you have asked the advice of a legal counsel and he had declared that you have no chance of winning a case. Be man enough to accept the fact that you are already old and that you are not productive anymore. After all, getting fired doesn't mean it's the end of the world. There are still a lot of things that you can do. If you are not qualify to work anymore, find ways to become productive even you are only at home. Maybe you can write and submit it for publication, this way you can still have income. Discover new things of your interest or anything that doesn't require a lot of power and energy like candle-making or soap-making, etc...
Remember, you can still be productive in your own little way even if you lose a job due to your age. It is hard to accept the fact that you were fired because of your age, but in the long run you can cope up with it. And you will find out that life is still wonderful and you still worth a lot.
