The Internet is such a great place to gain knowledge in seconds. But it can also be confusing for first time users, and annoying when you get pop ups and unwanted spam. The below guidelines outline the steps you need to take, to make sure your net time is spent on what you really want, as opposed to clearing and deleting what you don't.
FILTERING: Look to see what your online provider may offer in terms of filtering and monitoring services. You can also buy these services depending on your needs. For children, companies such as NetNanny.com or Cyberpatrol.com offer excellent filtering products, which allow you to control the content you want displayed and block websites you don't.
If your company has data sensitive material you want to protect, then sites such as Websense.com offer products which allow you to control all critical elements of web, data and messaging security.
FIREWALLS/ ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE: Installing both a firewall and anti-virus software is necessary, and look for those which offer customer support, especially if you're new to using a computer. A firewall prevents anyone from hacking into your computer. Having anti-virus software ensures you don't lose any data to bugs or viruses. One of the more popular ones is Norton Antivirus, but there are a lot of inexpensive ones available.
CREDIT SAFE SITES: If you do buy online, then make sure that the sites you use offer credit card protection. The site should have a credit card safe' logo near its shopping basket. If not, do not hesitate to ask them before you make any payments. Never divulge your credit card or any other personal information, unless you are absolutely sure it's safe for you to do so.
BLOCKING LISTS: If like me, you use facebook and other social applications, then you know how easy it is for someone to view your data. Make sure that any applications you use have the ability to protect you. This can easily be done by placing the names you don't want contacting you, on your block list.
POP UPS /SPAM : Pop ups can be disarmed simply by changing your cookie setting. With regards to Spam, all emails have a junk file option which can receive spam. Simply go to options and select the one your email server offers. Never open emails sent from parties unknown as they may contain potentially harmful viruses.
CHILDREN/TEENS: Your children need to be taught Internet safety rules right at the beginning. Set time limits and ensure your filtering processes are enabled. Explain to them that contact with strangers over the net, is just as dangerous as with strangers on the road. Remind them not to reveal any personal information, including their online passwords. Younger children will benefit from having their sites selected and added onto the favorites list. Older children can connect to user friendly sites and chat rooms that are monitored.
