In order to appreciate Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point), you must know some about the background of this once small remote little fishing town. Puerto Penasco over looks the Sea of Cortez. Most of Americans know Puerto Penasco as Rocky Point. In the last seven years the small fishing village has turned into a great getaway from most Americans. Most of the visitors are from the southwest region of the United States. Most part is due to the location of this once small village. The village is located about four hours southwest of Tucson, Arizona. There are more and more American's actually buying a piece of the Rocky Point and building there dream homes.
At the present time there are two ways to travel to Puerto Penasco, either by ground or by non-commercial flights to the out skirts. There is good new though. Mexican government is working with the United States to build a new airport in Puerto Penasco. This would allow even more growth to this once small fishing village. The same was done for Cancun and Los Cabos and everyone knows what type of vacation spots these two generate. With the future expansion of the local airport and getting commercial flights to Puerto Penasco, the growth will become Mexico's new hot spot.
As for now, Puerto Penasco is still a great place to take vacations. Even during the time when most other Mexico vacations spots are crowded and full, Puerto Penasco isn't as well known yet and would be less likely booked for vacations. But like I said before, with the expansion of the airport and the building a new hotels, this spot will be a hot place to go within the next few years.
There is a lot to do in Puerto Penasco as well. There are the same accommodations for travelers as you would get in the more popular resorts of Mexico. There is snorkeling for you and the kids, nice sunset cruises for couples and families, parasailing and there are places to have your wedding on the beach. There are also winter whale watching trips as well as fishing trips that can be planned. Most of the hotels that are in place are 3 and 4 star hotels. So with that you will get the same accommodations that you are used to getting with your usual vacation spot.
Puerto Penasco is also known for its dining and shopping. There are many top dining spots in and around the resorts. There are even a couple of places to order actual American style foods. I do prefer eating at the Sir Amigo. It has an oceanfront view with the nice evening breeze coming off the Sea of Cortez. It is a place where you could have a romantic dinner for two with a beautiful beach sunset in the background. There are other great places to eat of course but this one was my favorite. As for the shopping, there are several places to shop for just about anything you like. My personal favorite was to look at some of the custom made furnishing stores. Most of these furnishings are hand crafted and beautiful. You will spend hours in the furnishings stores before you know it. I know I did.
Who could forget the reason we all come to Mexico in the first place. The rest and relaxation on the beach. The beaches on the Sea of Cortez are breath taking. White sand beaches and the weather is nice year round. Except for the rainy season in late summer. But for the most part the weather is beautiful and the breeze is very relaxing.
I would bring my family or just come here as a couple. Puerto Penasco is a very relaxed atmosphere and the people are very nice as well. With it only being 45 minutes from the border of United States, you are never to far away from a peaceful, relaxing environment. I would recommend that everyone should try and visit Puerto Penasco and enjoy a piece of heaven.
