Movie reviews: Snakes on a Plane

by Perry Cox

Created on: April 16, 2008

When Sean Jones witnesses the murder of an American prosecutor by gang leader Eddie Kim it is up to FBI agent Neville Flynn to protect him and convince him to testify against Kim's crimes. Unable to trust local Police, Flynn takes Jones onto a plane headed for LA. Unfortunately, Kim catches wind of this and loads the plan with deadly snakes driven wild by pheromones sprayed on flowers in the cargo hold. Can Flynn protect his star witness from the "Snakes on a Plane"?

"Snakes on a Plane" is quite simply one of the best movies in recent years at hitting it's target audience and doing exactly what it says on the tin. Created in a wave of hype as a result of various internet forums, this is a superb homage to the disaster movies of yesteryear. With more than a passing resemblance to films such as "The Poseidon Adventure" and even doffing its cap at spoof movie "Airplane" this is a film that excites, amuses and entertains throughout. More obviously "Snakes on a Plane" is a homage to every B-movie horror ever made.

Although, certainly nothing new is to be found here, this is a film that is more than the sum of it's parts. Of course, the plot is ridiculous and threadbare at best. However, this is simply a device to set up the carnage when the snakes of the title are released on the plane in question. It is a stroke of genius that this film does not really bother with characterising the multitude of actors/snake fodder. Instead we are given us a large amount of unlikeable stereotypes from the arrogant Brit to vain cheerleader types and it is a joy to watch them meet there various, gory and often hilarious makers.

The snakes themselves are a colourful variety of vicious killers and vary from small killers slithering their way into peoples ears and down their pants to a huge python who happily will ingest a passing human. Either way they are a terrifying bunch yet strangely they have a degree of comedy value as they advance on the ragtag survivors and fall out of overhead baggage or even from the toilet. The majority of these snakes are clearly computer generated and that adds to the cartoony, playful feel this film has. However, much like spider horror "Arachnophobia" the often funny ways the snakes despatch their victims are also grisly and scary. In the same way "Arachnophobia" had me looking in my slippers before I put them on many women may be checking carefully before they put their hands in their bags the next time they are on a plane!
