When statistics prove that 32 per cent of NASA's engineers are of Indians I feel proud that the richest country in the world still has to rely on India to get its rockets off the ground. No other country can boast of such things. Remember Kalpana Chaw la the astronaut who was killed with her colleagues when their shuttle burnt up due to problems or Sunita Williams another Indian American who has her native country proud through her achievements of being the woman with a record for space walking.
Why and how do you think all this happened? It is because education in India is cheap. Just at medical tourism is picking up in India due to the availability of quality medical care at a highly reduced cost - when compared to rates in the USA - similarly India is expected to soon become an education hub because of the quality of its education.
Of course the system still has its glitches and teething troubles but they are expected to be ironed out in course of time. India is already the worlds most sought after business processing outsourcing hub mainly because Indians are willing to work to US time zones, a time when most good Americans are in bed. But the prime reason for this is of course the quality of the English, most Indians speak. Any Indian will easily speak two languages. One will be his mother tongue and the other will be English.
This is very helpful to tourists who can easily go to any corner of this vast land if they are good in English. Indians are also hospitable to a fault. And that is another reason why most people will prefer to come to this country for their education in the near future. But more than that what attracts people to this country is its culture where old age is respected and listened to, where families still follow the joint family system (but nuclear families are fast catching up) and the existence of numerous education institutions at all levels from primary school to professional colleges where education is cheap. Where it is costly, bank loans are available to meet needs and the Government of India's order that students should be given such loans has gone a long way in meeting this need and filling this gap.
Another reason is that the younger generation is still in its prime and it will be quite a few years before they think of retirement. Lack of English is the prime reason why China is still unable to compete with us in computer and computer related education. But they are trying hard to catch up and when they do, they will find that Indians have advanced still further. So need we have any doubt about India becoming the new global hub of education. Yes it is true and will stay true for a long time to come.
