"The sprinkler made a rainbow, mom", our Katie said in glee,
"Come look at it, it's beautiful", she pulled upon my hand,
The cat was wet, the garden soaked, though I'd never stopped to see,
The things that only children see and that they understand.
"You have to sit down here", she said, I bent to try and see,
The sprinkler sprinkled all around. Avoiding it, I bent,
With raindrops falling from the blades of grass she copied me,
A day in childhood sharing, that turned out to be well spent,
For way off in the distance, where the sunshine meets the flow,
Caused by a little sprinkler there's a magic kind of place,
Where a rainbow lives and moves with glee, that only children know,
And I shared it with my daughter, seeing joy upon her face.
She may believe in fairies, though I cannot now deny,
That perhaps they are quite real to her just like the rainbow's color,
And taking time to see these things, with a childlike detailed eye,
My life has found perspective, and in doing so, is fuller.

Sprinklers
Dewdrops glisten, like a gem; birds, sing a cheerful tune.
Earth and heaven awake refreshed, as time farewells
The water sprays out, in a cool gentle stream,
In the hot days of summer, it's every child's dream.

They wait patiently by the roadside
not the safest place to be.
I use to chase them all away
but now just wait to see.
