Practice Conversations For Those Who Make Mistakes
"I like your hair pulled back,"
the boy said and she smiled an awkward smile.
She wished she could've put into words,
how humiliated she felt every time
she was wrong.
"Impossible love would've been easy,"
she said and the boy swallowed back guilt.
Gazed with bloodshot eyes, an invitation on his lips
and with his leather jacket started walking over water.
She realized what she'd said.
"Shit, love of my life is leaving, do something,"
she told him and swallowed her pride.
Through small gulps of heated air,
the boy thought she was too fragile to be held.
She'd said no' too often to remember yes'.
"Why should it sound rude?"
she asked and for the first time didn't know the answer.
But though she waited in the airport silent,
she couldn't find the ring he never gave her,
under neon-lit skies and a coded goodbye.
"I'll be there when you wake up,"
she sounded corny but it was the boy who spoke.
A wall and she would smash into each other.
Of course she couldn't fly so far without falling.
And they spoke of naming children.
