Water sports & beach activities in Puerto Penasco, Mexico

Puerto Penasco, Mexico has it all. Shimmering water, frolicking Dolphins and raucous sea lions. No matter what floats your boat, you are bound to find it bobbing in the Sea of Cortez. Located Just a couple of hours drive from Arizona, and with ever improving access from Southern California, there is little to stop you from calling your insurance company, checking you are covered for a trip south of the border, and heading off into the sunrise.

Water sports are serious business in Mexico, and why not? The waters are warm and clear and the fish plentiful. Puerto Penasco, or Rocky Point if your pronunciation is bad, offers everything from a relaxing kayak along the Sea of Cortez, to a good old fashioned banana boat ride. There is every chance you will happen along a group of barking sea lions. The question is who will be making the most noise? The barking male Sea Lions, or the Spring breakers flying off the Banana Boat. Fortunately, It isn't all rowdy beach bars, but if that is what you are looking for Puerto Penasco certainly has its share.

If you are a thrill seeker and searching for an experience to remember then look no further. Puerto Penasco has just about every scary dangerous activity on sea, land or air that you could dream up. kite surfing is one way to go. It is incredibly physically challenging, but if you master it, what a thrill! Another great experience is Para sailing. The view over the craggy and desolate expanse of the Sierra Del Pinacate Reserve is nothing short of breathtaking. The stark contrast of the black rocks against the vast sand dunes of the Sonora Desert is a sight to behold. Add to this the azure blue of the Sea of Cortez and the true beauty of Mexico comes alive.

There are plenty of reefs in the area and the sea is teaming with life, making it a great spot to snorkel or try your hand at scuba diving. It is an ideal place to take scuba lessons and an economical way to obtain a scuba certification if you are really serious. It does take a fair bit of studying so you may have to forgo the shockingly easy to drink margaritas! The waters around Puerto Penasco can sometimes become a little churned up and Murky, depending on the weather and the tides, so it is always best to check with the locals where the best diving and snorkeling locations are.

A boat trip to Bird Island is a must for just about anyone. Not only do you get to spend half a day out on the sea, spotting dolphins, sea lions, the odd passing whale and Manta Rays, but you have the opportunity to visit this beautiful bird lovers paradise. It is a remarkable place, in a location that is truly unique.

Puerto Penasco has it all. Glorious sun, sandy beaches and warm soothing waters. Add to that a healthy mix of Mexican food and culture and you will fall in love with this south of the border gem in no time at all.
