"Do you believe in soul mates?" Bobby asked casually.
Christy didn't answer directly. She never did. She, instead, grabbed the honey jar and attempted to open it.
"Well, I know one thing. NASA is wasting time developing an extra strong adhesive for those troublesome solar panels. They should just use honey," she said flippantly.
He laughed, took the jar out of her hands and deftly opened it.
"Show off! Can't you at least pretend to struggle?" she grumbled even as a smile tugged at her lips.
He watched her pour the honey into her tea and slowly stir. She did everything with such deliberation, didn't matter if it was stirring honey into tea, ordering equipment for the lab tech, or answering seemingly innocent questions. It used to annoy him. Now it merely fascinated.
She lifted the cup to her lips and took a tentative sip. It was too hot still. It burned the tip of her tongue. She lowered the cup and said "I suppose if there are soul mates then mine would be able to open honey jars for me."
Bobby smiled behind his coffee mug. That was one point in his favor but would there be others? "But do you believe in soul mates?" he asked again.
"Depends on your definition," she retorted, taking up the spoon and stirring again.
"Isn't there just one definition?"
"Depends who you ask."
"A lot of depending, huh?" he said chuckling. "A soul mate is your perfect mate, the one person made for you."
"Yes, but some consider a soul mate your other half."
"And the difference is?"
Christy took up her tea again and sipped carefully. Almost there, but it was a bit too hot still. She closed her eyes, inhaled the lovely apple blossom like aroma of the chamomile and smiled. Her own version of aroma therapy, tea time was. She loved this time to wind down after a busy morning. Leave it to Bobby to make her further enjoy it by making her think of other things than all that still needed to be done before heading home.
"Some believe a soul mate is someone who thinks precisely as they do. Others think a soul mate is someone who essentially makes up for what you lack, making you a complete person. But of course that means you'd have to believe yourself half a person until you find this wonderful creature," she said carefully. "How many people are willing to admit they are not all there? I wouldn't think many."
He gazed at her, dazzled and not just because she was the most beautiful woman he knew. "Which do you believe?" he asked curiously.
"I didn't say I believe in soul mates."
"So, you don't?" he persisted.
"I
