Poetry: The masks we wear

by Liz Chase

Created on: April 15, 2008

Everyday I wear a mask to cover what's inside
You will never know how I feel by just looking
To you, I am me

To you, I am put together
To you, I am older
To you, I could never understand

When I wake up in the morning I choose
Which face I will wear that day and pick out which smile
To you, I don't know

To you, I don't know how you feel
To you, I've never been where you are at
To you, I could never relate

Every evening I wash away my make-up
I clear my mask and end up looking at myself again
To you, I am she.

To you, she is so happy
To you, she is so lucky
To you, she has never walked in my shoes

Every night I have these dreams of what I could have been
I wake up and find that I am who I chose to be
To you, I am me

To you, I am living the dream
To you, I am what you wish you could be
To you.You don't know me at all
