The effects of combining antibiotics and alcohol

by Linda Hamilton

Created on: April 15, 2008

I have heard from doctors many times before about how important it is to read the labels of the antibiotics you decide to take and not to drink when taking these prescriptions. The alcohol can cause problems when mixing it with any kind of drug. When drunk you can make the wrong decisions anyway so taking any drug along with it could cause severe results.

There are several types of drugs that will make you not only sick but pass out from the mixture. There are a number of drugs out there that can have an everlasting effect on you and sometimes go as far as causing death when mixing them with alcohol. Some other side effects are nausea, headaches, convulsions, and vomiting.

Each year their tends to be many people running to the hospital after combining alcohol with antibiotics. There's an average of 394,224 Americans that go to the hospital each year from the effects it caused.

Average, every day people seem to have this problem with mixing both substances. The problems that this causes can completely be avoided as long as they do not drink alcohol with any drug. Be on the safe side and do not do this at all for any reason. There are actuall senior citizens that do this as well and can cause their own death.

There are some simple over the counter drugs such as allergy medicine that do have some alcohol in them. If you take them with another drug that requires or strongly suggests that you don't mix together with alcohol then it could cause you to have some severe results. You can start with dizziness then nausea and vomiting, and then you could have convulsions that might result to hospitalizations depending on your body.

The best suggestion I could offer is to not mix alcohol with any other substance. Be sure that you are not taking any cough medicine when you go out drinking. Make sure you are not taking any antibiotics while drinking. Even if hours pass and you start drinking you could still cause a problem for yourself. There's no need to drink alcohol at all until you are well again or at least not taking any kind of medication. Always be sure there's no alcohol in your medicine if you are taking an antibiotic along with an over the counter drug.
