Penasco, Mexico (Rocky Point) is flanked by the clear green waters of the Sea of Cortez, both sandy and rocky beaches, warm weather, and an offshore reef abundant with life. All of these add up to a playground for beach and water activities beyond compare. Visitors to the area can enjoy fun in the sun in a score of different ways.
Swimming: The warm emerald waters of Penasco invite visitors to a refreshing dip. Since the waves are generally very small, with little under current, swimming in the clear sea is safe and enjoyable.
Scuba Diving: The area has several great sites that will reward divers with up-close views of colorful fish, sand dollars, starfish, sharks' teeth, coral, and other marine life. Sometimes a friendly sea lion or seal might even join you! Some of the best dive sites are the two small reefs off the beach at Los Canchos Development, near Bird Island, and at Pelican Point at Cholla Bay. Certified and uncertified divers are usually allowed on dive boats.
Parasailing: Parasail over the Sea of Cortez with a friend or by yourself for some magnificent views. You'll find very reasonable rates at Rocky Point, and anyone over six years of age can "test their wings"!
Snorkeling: A good place to snorkel is among the rocks at Rocky Beach during high tide. Also, you can take a snorkel tour to Bird Island for some great snorkeling and a chance to swim with sea mammals.
Jet Skiing: Several vendors along the beach rent jet skis and wave runners, and the calm waters make for a perfect ride!
Boating: For a self-guided tour, rent a boat at one of the marinas near Rocky Point. Spend the day exploring the coast, swimming, fishing, or just relaxing in the salty air and sunshine.
Deep Sea Fishing: Charter a fishing boat to take you out to the productive grounds offshore to fish the waters that Steinbeck made famous. Most of the boats have state-of-the-art equipment, an experienced captain, and a crew who'll bait your hook, remove your fish, and fillet and bag your catch. Regular catches include swordfish, marlin, red snapper, halibut, yellowtail, rock bass, shortfin corvina, and calico bass. Many of these vessels even have private restrooms and cabins!
Banana Boats: For some real fun, gather a few friends and take a jaunt on a banana boat! You'll sit atop a giant banana as a powerboat tows you and your pals around, just off the beach. Several local outfits offer the rides.
Cruises: Many different types of cruises are offered in the Rocky Point area, including sunset cruises, dinner cruises, whale watching cruises, pirate cruises, and trips to Bird Island to see the interesting bird species and sea lions. A cruise is a great way for the whole family to spend time together!
Kite Surfing: While you're in Penasco, do yourself a favor - take a lesson or two and learn to kite surf in the Sea of Cortez. This is a truly unforgettable experience!
Kayaking: Rent a kayak from a local vendor and take a tour of the expansive estuary. You'll see all kinds of birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish, along with native plants.
