Thoughts on small town gossip

I live in a very small town. The population is under a thousand people. I love my hometown. But, I must say the gossip in a small town can be a bit overwhelming at times. I know first hand about stories in the gossip mill.

You see, in a small town everyone knows who you are. This sounds great to some people, but, trust me it really is not. You don't really have alot of privacy, living in a small town. The gossip mill in my town also only focus on the bad things that happen to you. For some reason, they never tell the good stuff that you have done. It's always bad. Everyone wants to hear a story about someone doing something nice for others, but this rarely happens where I live.

The gossip in my town does not take long to get passed around. I hate the small town gossip. It is not so bad now, but when I was in high school, it was dreadful. Let me tell you one of the accidents that happened to me because of gossip. It was 1997, somehow I got really sick. I had to be off work for a while. The lady I worked for began telling everyone that I was pregnant. Which of course was not true. When it got back to my daddy, he was about to have a nervous breakdown. That woman could have just told people that I was sick, and left off the pregnant bit. It was kind of embarrassing to. The gossip mill gets old after a while. You just have to take it one day at a time, and try not to let it get to you.

When gossipers gets finished telling a story, it has been stretched so far, you can not believe any of it. It can be good when they start, but I guarantee you, by the end, it ends in something like gloom. This is how the gossip mills work. This is always true, where I live. People are nosy here, and they tell ugly stories.

The people in the gossip mill, don't really mean any harm. They just never seem to get all the facts. You should never believe the gossip where you live. A lot of people who gossip, think they know everything, when really they don't know anything at all. If you live in a small town, you understand how I feel.

In closing, if you live in a small town, you should try to be respectful of people's privacy. Try not to believe everything that you hear. The best advice, I can give you is this, just don't give people a reason to talk. Live your life, and try not to involve others in your problems. It works for me. The way I look at it is, if they don't have anything to talk about, then they can't talk.
