is the kindest most gentle creature around. His story is a heartbreaking one as he's treated very unfairly by the townsfolk. Ultimately Edward takes himself out of their lives, to protect them from accidents and himself from the pain of not fitting in. Thus he becomes a hero of the most tragic proportions.

Batman
Christopher Nolan's revival of the franchise has dispensed with the juvenile and the campness long associated with Batman, opting instead to provide a more fragile, believable, human angle to the story. This is what makes Christian Bale's Batman the most heroic portrayal yet.

Woody and Buzz from Toy Story
The daring duo from Toy Story are first class animated action heroes, replete with foibles that serve to make them even more lovable. When push comes to shove, neither character deserts the other, which is why it's impossible to choose between them.

Hellboy
Guillermo del Toro's fantastically weird and wonderful demon Hellboy selflessly defends an ignorant public from all sorts of supernatural beasties. He's an unappreciated hero, the most acutely poignant kind.

Heroes (and villains) are such an essential part of the fantasy genre, it's a formidable task to choose the most memorable. This list could go on and on, there are so many great hero characters, but the snapshot selected above certainly demonstrate all the required credentials, albeit in varied ways and on many different levels. That said, the best heroes are definitely the multifaceted ones.
