I am a licensed cosmetologist and hair color educator, for 20 years, in the State of Michigan. I have experienced a trend of more and more teenagers entering the world of hair color. This increase in what use to be an adult only service is from the influence of teens in the media. Many teens in the public eye change their natural hair color and style often enough for their fans to notice and want and these young viewers want the look that their famous peers have.
Teenagers have many opportunities, with their parents blessing, to express their personalities through their hair style and color. More often than not, the parent is the one bringing the teen in to "give their child a boost" or "a change" or "whatever they want". I find that parents want their kids to be more "pretty", more "popular" and more "in-style" than they were allowed to be. A vast majority of teenagers today receive hair color because their parents encourage them to be up-to-date.
Teenagers color their hair so much because they have access to funds to do so; such as parents, personal jobs and gift cards. This financial access leads to a wide variety of color services in a professional environment. Teens, today, have financial options that many of us did not have as teens. Those teens that do not have these resources resort to box color from the store to keep up with their peers' color addictions.
On the other hand, many teens color their hair so often just for fun of it. There are many options available to teens that are fun and affordable. Mini-Highlights, Sun-Kissed Highlights and Peek-a-Boo Highlights-just to name a few. As teens browse through photo after photo of the latest Teen Icon looks they dream of looking and living like the Pop-Culture Teens of this era. Many of the kids today are just following the trend that is in front of them. Simply put, Teens are coloring their hair so much: because they want to, because their parents encourage them to or because their favorite Teen Idol is doing it. Regardless of the reason behind the hair-coloring madness for teens, it's just FUN!
